Prof. Jude Ohaeri

Prof. Jude Ohaeri is a research psychiatrist and consultant. From the mid-1980s when Nigeria was widely reported to be an international transit route for hard drugs, and inspired by his late mentor, Professor A.O. Odejide, he studied the epidemiology of substance use disorders in community- and clinic-based settings. He also sought to articulate psychological methods for treating addiction, including the use of charts and lucid dreaming. Notably, he determined the burden of drug dependence on Nigerian psychiatric care facilities in a 1-year period. He was the foundation Secretary of the Committee that articulated the policies for the Counseling (Demand Reduction) Unit of NDLEA. In an active private practice setting in 2020, he has articulated a 12 – week addiction treatment program, titled: “A lifelong Journey in Recovery”. Professor Ohaeri is a Doctor of Science (DSc, Ib); Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists; International Fellow, American Psychiatric Association; Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science; and Foundation Member, Board of Trustees, Nigerian Academy of Medicine.
